Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted to speak at Akron workforce event

Husted, who is heading the state’s InnovateOhio office, will be the keynote speaker at ConxusNEO’s Align conference on Thursday, April 11. The event brings together employers, educators and workforce groups to improve training and build a better talent pipeline.

Ohio Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will speak at ConxusNEO’s Align conference on Thursday, April 11, in Fairlawn, according to the workforce development group’s president, Sue Lacy.

“Lt. Gov. Husted will be our keynote,” said Lacy, whose Summit County group is organizing the event.

ConxusNEO had been hoping that Husted would make the trip to present at the conference and views the state as a valuable partner and source of support, she said. Gov. Mike DeWine has tapped Husted to lead the new InnovateOhio office, which will focus on the use of technology by state agencies and promote training for in-demand industries.

ConxusNEO works with area employers to assess the skills needed to find good jobs in the region, and then works with educational partners and other organizations to train workers in those skills.

“This is really good. We’re excited because the work that we’ve been doing over the last several years is the kind of work that the governor and lieutenant governor are promoting and supporting,” Lacy said.” So, we look forward to his leadership, vision and guidance, and we look forward to a strong partnership to take our work to scale for the benefit of our companies and our residents.”

In addition to Husted, Align’s half-day program includes remarks by Summa Health senior vice president Lorraine Washington, Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Akron Mayor Dan Horrigan. Also, GAR Foundation president Christine Mayer and Greater Akron Chamber CEO Steve Millard will discuss Elevate Akron, an effort to plan for greater coordination among area economic developers.

There also will be a presentation by ConxusNEO vice president Michelle Cassetty Collins on 12,000 promising jobs in the area and how to find them, as well as roundtable discussions to help employers find job candidates.

Cost for the event, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon at Hilton Akron/Fairlawn, 3180 W. Market St., is $60. Tickets are available online.
